The Things We Leave Behind
|
 |
 |
"Greetings..."
There are times when I marvel at the nature of existence. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The more power I acquire, the more I find myself doing more things to get... well, more power.
"My Master has a message for you."
Doing things to get more power in and of itself is not a problem. Not for me at least. Especially if at the end of the day, I have more power. That is, more often than not, the point of why I and a chosen few like myself do the things we do.
"It is this: Welcome."
By way of example, I have the power to send several teams of adventurers - many with more altruistic motives than myself - on simple delivery missions. After everything I've done, everything I've seen, everything I've learned, the alliances I've forged - that I submit myself to delivering some ad hoc Bishop's mail makes me believe that a irony is a primary component in the fabric of reality itself.
"Welcome to a cold death."
And it exists in said fabric in greater proportion to any other element of creation.
Personally, I don't get out of bed in the morning without the thought that this day may be the day I actually manage to murder one of my long-time friends. Not so I can take her place, power and possessions and make them mine - no, no. So I can take them and make them my lover's. It's easier to wield power over people than power over... well, power. Plans within plans, contingencies for all. At the moment, I've taken to distracting myself from my more involved machinations by participating in a plot to assassinate an allied guild's leader. Not because I dislike her, or because I covet what she has.
It's just something to do.
And I've never killed a Druid before. One should have a plethora of diverse experiences.
I emerge from the Shattrath portal to stand in the inner sanctum of the Stormwind Mage Tower. I summon Drax, and as I mount I notice my new found companion has managed to keep pace across the dimensional planes.
"If you struggle, then before your death you will face pain and horror and the loss of all you love."
Whatever.
Not knowing that your prey has seen more than her fair share of death and loss is a clear sign of the folly in sending a minion to do the master's job. Never good policy.
And I ceased to fear my own death quite some time ago.
I ride Drax hard across the Trade District before skirting Old Town and driving to a straight gallop through the main hall of Stormwind Keep. I'm halfway to the throne itself before the castle's sanctuary spell forces me to dismount. Varian Wrynn, freshly returned to the throne of Stormwind is pleased to see me - and even more pleased to receive my delivery. I also present him with my [Haunted Memento] in the name of Sorcerra. A small token of her esteem, and relief at the King's return. I hope His Majesty enjoys the company of my traveling companion as much as I have.
I decide to walk across town to Stormwind's newly completed docks. As I arrive, I sit under one of the trees near the closest pier, and summon Angrida to massage my shoulders. The crack of her whip signals the appearance of a boat on the horizon, not nearly as late as I expected it to be. I actually find myself becoming anxious for the passengers to disembark.
Because in truth, the only thing that really scares me is Sorcerra managing to die before I manage to kill her.
A new chapter begins...

Happy Release Day, everyone! And a friendly reminder from your local Warlocks that your killing sprees need not be limited to Northrend mobs!
